Conch Shell

Conch (say "konk") live on the sandy bottom of the ocean in the shallow water near shore. A type of huge snail, conch have large spiral shells. As the conch grows, it secretes an ever-enlarging shell in a long twisted spiral around its body. This conch shell was probably washed onto the shore by the large waves of a storm. The conch shell was 10 inches long.

The scientific class name of snails is Gastropoda (say "Gas-tro-POH-duh"). This is a Latin word that means "stomach foot." The two parts of the word are "gastro," meaning stomach; and "pod," meaning foot.
